At the International Reciprocal Trade Association annual convention a new, modernized code of ethics was adopted. The new Ethics Code contains important guidelines for barter exchange conduct on the relevant issues facing the barter industry today. The Ethics Code was the result of the hard work of the Ethics Code Revision Committee which consisted of Mike Mercier, IRTA President (Metro Trade), Mary Ellen Rosinski, IRTA Treasurer (Tradesource), Annette Riggs, IRTA Secretary (Community Connect Trade), Harold Rice (American Exchange Network) and Ron Whitney, IRTA Executive Director. “The new IRTA Ethics Code is a huge step forward in setting meaningful standards in the barter industry. The new Ethics Code is a clear indicator that membership in IRTA represents the highest level of professional conduct and ethical standards available in the industry” said IRTA Global Board Member and Treasurer, Mary Ellen Rosinski.

Among the new code changes are articles addressing tax reporting, marketing language, provisions for unfair competition, and disciplinary actions.

Barter Business Unlimited announced today that it will be holding its 2011 Barter Expo at the Bradley Hotel on Thursday, November 10, 2011 from 4 to 9 p.m. Over 3,500 business professionals along with their employees, families and friends are expected to attend one of nation’s leading barter exchange events which will include over 110 exhibit booths, entertainment, live and silent auction, gourmet food selections and refreshments.

“Barter certainly has become one of the most valuable business tools that company owners and managers have discovered during the last several years. We have members conserving their cash outlays and actually growing their businesses, expanding their market share and increasing sales during these challenging economic times using barter. Our annual barter expo is one of the premier events for our members to trade goods and services while expanding their business network,” explained Debbie Lombardi, president, Barter Business Unlimited, www.bbubarter.com. “Several millions of dollars are expected to be traded during this year’s 2011 Barter Expo.”

The Bradley Hotel is located at 383 South Center Street, Windsor Locks, CT, phone (860) 627-7762, www.bradleyhotel.com. From I-91 south take Exit 41 and from I-91 North take Exit 42 then take a right onto Rt. 159. This year’s growing list of barter expo sponsors include Barnum Financial www.barnumfinancialgroup.com, Connecticut Business Hall Of Fame www.ctbhof.com, and the Bradley Hotel. In addition to BBU members attending the event, all business owners and managers are invited to attend the barter expo and experience the advantages of barter just by presenting a business card and proper identification at the entrance. Significant membership discounts are available to all new members who sign-up at the expo and corporate sponsorships are still available as well.

“As a longtime Barter Business Unlimited member, I find the annual barter expo a great opportunity to network and increase your sales. I also start my holiday gift buying season for friends and clients at the expo,” said Kris Rutkowski, owner, Tri-City Trading, New Britain, CT, www.tri-citytrading.com.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to host the upcoming 2011 Barter Expo. Thousands of people from parts throughout the United States are expected to attend as they trade their products and services utilizing barter as a smart business tool,” said Harold Thompson, events manager, Bradley Hotel. “We’re making arrangements for barter member booth exhibits that include companies involved in almost every area of business — from healthcare, entertainment, office supplies, retail to financial and legal industries, dental care, pet care, hospitality and many other areas of business.”

Looking for an environmentally-friendly way to update your movie and music libraries without spending a dime? Clear your shelves of the DVDs, Blu-rays, records and CDs you’re finished with and swap for movies and albums that are new to you.

DATE: Sunday, September 25
TIME: 12pm – 6pm; FREE event!
WEBSITE: http://www.swapsity.ca/
… LOCATION: Kensington Market, Augusta and Wales Avenue
MEETUP: http://www.meetup.com/GTA-Green-Swap-Meet/events/31585242

Swing by Swapsity’s Swap Zone at Kensington Market’s Pedestrian Sundays on September 25 with your pre-loved media items and join your fellow Torontonians in swapping, sharing and recycling. Bring as many items as you wish to trade and you’ll receive one token per item to swap with. All media is considered of equal value. For instance, drop off An Inconvenient Truth on DVD and take home a Lady Gaga CD.

As a community, we’re aiming to create a large media library sure to offer something that will catch your eye. Build your collection the green way by swapping your movies and music for some new entertainment gems!

Swapping Guidelines
1. You can bring an unlimited number of DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs and vinyl records to the swap. To participate, you must contribute at least one media item.
2. Participants are invited to bring movies and music of any genre. No X-rated or questionable media please. We reserve the right to not accept any items that we feel are unsuitable.
3. Please bring original media only. Counterfeit or pirated media items will not be accepted.
4. The items must be in good condition. Please do not bring any media items that skip or do not work. We will be checking all items that are dropped off to ensure they are original and not scratched. Remember, your items will be passed on to a fellow Torontonian!
5. You will be able to take the same number of items that you bring. You can also choose to take back fewer items. Keep in mind that all swaps are final.
6. All media items will be considered equal value. For example, if you contribute 10 DVDs, you could swap it for five records, three CDs, one Blu-ray and one DVD.
7. We will be accepting movies and music in both English and French. Please refrain from bringing foreign language media to this swap event..
8. There will be no money exchanged and no purchase of swap items. Just pure swapping.
9. You can redeem your tokens anytime between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on September 25. If you have a token but don’t find anything you like when you arrive, you can come back to the Swap Zone later in the day to swap your token for new arrivals.
10. You will receive 1 swap token for each disc you contribute. For example: if you bring the sixth season of Smallville on four Blu-ray discs, you will be given four tokens to use toward other media items. If you bring a two-disc DVD set of Planet Earth, you will be give two swap tokens.
11. All media items must be stored in a case. Media items must be original, but the cases don’t have to be.

For more ways to swap your items and skills, check out Swapsity (www.swapsity.ca), a Toronto-based swapping community dedicated to building a greener lifestyle through barter.

See you on September 25!

With more than $2.6 billion USD in barter done by Ormita to date it’s a bit of a worry that few people in the industry actually understand what we do.

We like to work with other barter companies but we do little of it simply because they do not understand our business model and/or are not sized accordingly. I would like to rectify this issue by explaining what we do and how we can help your barter customers and, ultimately, you.

First off: we typically work with Governments, Manufacturers and Media. These people can sell direct to end-consumers (not retailers in most cases and not importers) on barter. The benefit for them is that they make the “markup” on barter at a higher percentage than if they sold via an importer, wholesaler, retailer and then to an end-user…

Secondly: we help businesses moving into international markets and seeking international customers.

* * * * * *

Some reasons to find foreign (cash paying) customers

* * * * * *

About half the USA & Europe debts are to China and India.

Since 1975 imports to the USA have exceeded exports.

Businesses need to find new ways to create sales in a rapidly changing market.

Businesses who do not change run the risk of market erosion and eventual financial collapse!

….

Ormita provides a way for businesses in your area to enter new Rapidly Emerging Markets in a risk-free manner and get more CASH PAYING CUSTOMERS!!!

We can also provide your barter exchange members with free telephone, SKYPE or in-person consulting services on how to enter the market, work out a budget of expenses and offset those expenses against barter-backed sales.

You charge the fees to YOUR customers for their transactions (purchases and sales) via your barter exchange. We do not charge you or your customers. We do not recieve fees from you.

We benefit from stimulating overall trade between businesses.

Ormita can help your customers enter the following markets:

- Poland

- Germany

- Greece

- Sweden

- Turkey

- Iran

- China *** (the fastest growing market in the world)

- Hong Kong

- India *** *** (one of fastest growing markets in the world)

- Mexico

When a company enters a foreign market they must pay for:

- Advertising, legal advice, incorporations, equipment, accounting services, hospitality, accommodations, translation, localisation and other expenses.

All of these things Ormita can provide to them on a barter basis.

In some markets counter-trade may be mandated by law and we can work out solutions for them to create profitable counter-trade arrangements and cash out of these (recieve barter in return and sell that for cash).

As I mentioned, very few exchange operators understand what we do in the larger scheme of things. In some instances we represent foreign governments directly, in some we represent corporations and others new start-ups. Our range of business activities spans the entire gambit of barter and non-cash based transactions and is not restricted to retail barter.

I would like to work with your organisation to offer your customers other ways to earn REAL CASH in foreign countries and to offset any expenses that they may have in doing so through barter arrangements.

Our goal is a bit different to some exchanges in that all of our activities are based around generating new cash sales for our customers as well as offsetting existing expenses and because of the size of transactions we are able to deal with, as well as our government representations in trade, we can assist in fairly complex arrangements.

For barter dollars spent by your members on our members products or services we generally only want media (advertising) or hotel accommodation in return and we are happy to let you have a recip account with us and to offer you advance credits.

Essentially: if your customers are looking for deals in foreign markets and/or cash customers from foreign markets we can make it happen. Also if they are looking for sourcing from foreign markets (provided these are high-value long term relationships as sourcing on barter for once-off deals is not our focus).

Please let me know what you need from us and we will set up a call to make it happen. Again: we don’t prefer one-off deals on barter except for market-entry assistance but for products import/export on barter we only look for longer term transactions of higher values.

“The Government rejected any comparison of vonNotHaus counterfeiting activities with legitimate Barter currencies. “”

The U.S. organized barter industry was officially sanctioned by the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) of 1982 and signed by President Reagan.

Recent media reports about Bernard vonNotHaus, who is awaiting Federal sentencing in North Carolina, seem to have caused confusion about barter.

VonNotHaus, who was recently found guilty of making coins resembling and similar to United States coins; of issuing, passing, selling, and possessing Liberty Dollar coins; of issuing and passing Liberty Dollar coins intended for use as current money; and of conspiracy against the United States.

VonNotHaus’ Charlotte-based lawyer Aaron Michel, who is appealing the conviction, attempted in Federal District Court to portray vonNotHaus’ private coinage as a form of private voluntary barter currency. He argued Liberty Dollars were a means to help keep currency in local communities by creating networks of merchants and consumers who used the money.

Numerous organizations have experimented with local currency, but Federal laws restrict them from resembling U.S. bills or from being passed off as money printed by the Federal government, which vonNotHaus’ coinage resembled.

“Recent news stories suggesting that the Liberty Dollars verdict is a signal that the Government is against private Barter currencies are categorically incorrect and ignore the facts of the case,” said Mr. Whitney. “The Government rejected any comparison of vonNotHaus counterfeiting activities with legitimate Barter currencies. “

As the Government stated in its U.S. District Court Brief of April 7, 2011, “the defendant was not operating a private currency barter system, rather he was counterfeiting United State coins and using deceptive means to inject them into the flow of current money to defraud the public.”

The Government’s arguments in the case clearly substantiate the legality and validity of The Modern Trade and Barter Industry.

The mission of IRTA is to provide to all Industry Members with an ethically based global organization dedicated to the advancement of Modern Trade and Barter and other complementary capital systems, through the use of education, self regulation, high standards and government relations.

I received word from Ron Whitney of IRTA recently that the article I reported on in the Examiner, the article reporting an attack on barter currencies, was not factually correct by any means. From Ron:

Tyler:

The slant of Mr. Shortgen’s article in the Examiner.com is incorrect. First, you need to read the revised article at http://www.examiner.com/finance-examiner-in-national/federal-government-seeking-to-make-forms-of-bartering-illegal-after-court-ruling that has an extensive review of the matter by IRTA.

Secondly, the Government is clearly on record of saying (Government Brief in Opposition to Defendant’s Motions Under Rules 29, 33 and 34, filed April 7th, 2011) that “the defendant was not operating a private currency barter system, rather he was counterfeiting United State coins and using deceptive means to inject them into the flow of current money to defraud the public.” (Page 5.) Further on page
13, the Government states ” the evidence at trial clearly demonstrate that the activities surrounding the creation and distribution of the Liberty Dollars were in no way a competing private voluntary currency system , but rather constituted a deceptive and fraudulent scheme designed and implemented by the defendant.” Lastly, on page 14, the Government goes on to say, “any comparison of Defendant’s creation and distribution of Liberty Dollar coins to localized private exchange systems such as the Ithaca Hour or Disney Dollar are absurd on their face.”

Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue. Sincerely,

Ron Whitney
IRTA Executive Director

Apparently this is an attempt at getting viewers at the expense of the barter world. In the words of one of my favorites, “What a maroon.”
