This is a video from last year’s IRTA convention. Catherine Fitts talks about the role of barter in the “new” economy. Her assertion is that the global economy is breaking down and that barter will fill the role of traditional currency in global transactions. It sounds like there are a number of people thinking that barter is poised to finally have a run at being a mainstream business. If you have the time, it’s a good watch. It’s about an hour and a half, so give yourself some time. It’s a year old, but it’s even more relevant to the barter industry now than it was then.

I found this on a Bulgarian news site, but apparently in the wake of 300,000 Bulgarians losing their jobs, the government has approved a legislated program where bonafide companies can give trade for food instead of money to their employees. They have mandated limits on this form of compensation, but it makes sense to me…if your people are hungry, they need food, sometimes more than they need cash. If a company can’t pay cash, why not let them barter for food. The post-Cold War country has a rich barter history, and this period of international economic instability has provided fertile ground for a government backed barter program. Kudos to them. I wish President Obama would embrace barter to that extent. The Bulgarians don’t have to pay taxes on their food voucher program…

More and more Bulgarians receive their salaries in the form of food barters. Companies en mass hand out food vouchers to aid their budget in the crisis. The state allows up to 60 levs of the salary to be given in the form of vouchers. Only concrete licensed companies have the right to distribute them. Barter monthly pay cannot exceed 180 million levs for a year.”The interest in this alternative form of payment is so great that some of the operators have exhausted their vouchers for 2009,” Teodor Markov, a manager of one of the companies which emit vouchers told the Standart.Using vouchers is financially beneficial for both companies and workers because neither pays taxes on the vouchers’ cost.

AssetFair will allow for the unloading or restructuring of debt, as long as an asset of a higher value is pledged in order to achieve a positive Exchangeable Equity. The TradeYourDebt feature on AssetFair.com allows registered members to post their debts and find an interested party to acquire the encumbered or related asset and willing to pay off or assume the debt. The site provides tools to execute the exchange of assets from escrow to shipping. Members who are not currently participating in trading can also use the site as an active forum for asset evaluation, lending opportunities and information on current exchange trends.

In my search for barter and trade related news I stumbled on this article from the Bismarck Tribune about a group of people that used to get together in the park to swap whatever they had for the stuff that they wanted, back in the ’60s and ’70s. Now they are using Facebook as the medium of contacting each other.

It’s highly interesting to me to note how barter really is becoming mainstream, but not like I had always imagined it. I used to think that barter and trade exchanges were going to become as mainstream as banks and credit unions. Instead, in our cashless economy, people are just finding each other and doing business without currency.

I still have yet to find a good example of a barter company, besides internet startups, that is taking full advantage of what is going on right now in the economy. Will that exchange be yours?

So I wasn’t completely shocked to stumble upon the Bismarck Bartering Network on Facebook. Constant readers will recall that Facebook is the world I live in now.The BBN, as it were, harkens back to at least the 1970s and, before that, the pre-industrial agrarian lifestyle. The system is simple: Make or do something. Trade it for other things that you need or want. No money changes hands. The variety of goods and services is impressive for such a fledgling endeavor. Need legal help? Need a massage? Need legal help after a massage? It’s all there.

Bartering makes comeback

And what is it going to take to make sure that your exchange wins? If bartering is as easy as finding someone who has what you want right now, how are you going to attract long term customers? Have answers? Let me know…

If you don’t, I have some for you.

I found this, and am going to include it in today’s Barter News Weekly. If Marc Hatch is involved, you can assume the media he is going to get is legitimate. I have to say, when I first saw this press release, I thought it was a good gimick, a nice way to sell barter, but I have known Marc for a while and done some good deals with him. If he’s doing this, it should be pretty good.

Barter Media Solutions Announces $200 Million Economic Stimulus Plan for Small to Medium Sized Businesses

Virtually all small to medium sized businesses can now receive a $25,000 to $2 million revolving line of credit from Barter Media Solutions

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ — Barter Media Solutions announces the launch of its $200 million economic stimulus plan. The plan provides companies with an immediate revolving credit line of $25,000 to $2 million or more to purchase all major forms of advertising.

“The government has spent hundreds of billions of dollars bailing out banks and large corporations. Unfortunately most small to medium sized businesses did not receive government bailouts, and the banks that received bailout funds are still holding back on their lending to small businesses, making it increasingly more difficult to access funds,” says Jay Greenlees, president of Barter Media Solutions. “Many companies find themselves in a tight cash squeeze and feel compelled to cut back in some of the most important areas they need to continue to invest in: advertising, branding and marketing. Barter Media Solutions’ $200 million dollar economic stimulus plan is designed to help any cash-strapped small or medium sized business.”

Businesses need to advertise to develop branding and market awareness, to gain new clients and market share and to continue to grow. During these challenging economic times, a business needs every advantage possible to sustain and grow. The economic stimulus plan from Barter Media Solutions gives businesses this opportunity through revolving credit for the purchase of major advertising through Barter Media Solutions. Companies using the plan pay for the advertising with guaranteed new sales of their products and services. Through its $200 million dollar stimulus plan Barter Media Solutions financially guarantees each company will make new sales at least equal to the amount spent on advertising through Barter Media Solutions.

About Barter Media Solutions

Principals Marc Hatch and Jay Greenlees formed Barter Media Solutions to provide an innovative set of financing solutions to meet the growing needs of small to medium sized businesses that are finding it increasingly difficult to get access to funds to meet their advertising, branding and marketing needs.
