According to an article in the Orange County Register, a man is trying to barter a healthy kidney for stem-cell transplant surgery. Albert Rodriguez is a 72 year old man with severe glaucoma. Laser procedures have not been able to fix the glaucoma, and the only other option is a rare and expensive transplant.
“I’m trying to save my sight. I’m going blind,” he said in the dining room of the Santa Ana home where he lives with his sister and her husband. “I’m trying to find somebody to trade with me. Everybody keeps telling me I can’t do that.”
The medical community says that swapping body parts is a problem and a slippery slope leading to things like kidney theives. What does the barter community say?
