Russia Attempts to Barter Away Thai Debt


In 1990 Russia agreed to buy 200,000 tons of rice from Thailand for the price of $60M to be paid back within two years at 4% interest. Well, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the payments didn’t come and the interest acrued. Two decades later the Thai government is highly interested in putting this deal behind them and opening up more inter-country commerce, so they are considering a direct barter scenario for the remaining debt, which is approximately $41M.
