Two men recently finished a month long experiment in barter. Apparently the two gave up everything but housing and not all utilities. The story is very intriguing and has some great points. The best is that barter provides an opportunity for people to connect on levels that cash transactions don’t provide.

McCorkle’s bartering led him into situations he called “webs,” where one trade fed off another, and then spawned even more.

“When we’re handing money over for something that’s neatly packaged, we’re not satisfying that human need for building relationships,” he said.

“It’s really about the relationships we build when we’re trading.”
